2018 Softball UPDATES

As the overall tone of recreational sports has changed throughout the years, the OYA has strived to keep our teams current and our girls competitive in whatever sport they choose to pursue.   With that being said, the upcoming rec season for girls' softball will be a bit different than in the past.

Following is a summary of some of the most important adjustments that will be made for Spring and beyond:

~ All girls will now be placed in the appropriate division by their age, NOT GRADE.  This change was implemented last year at the 15u and 12u age groups, and worked out well.   Divisions will be as follows:
Kiddie Klinic - instructional level 't-ball',  in which players must be at least 5 years old
8u - your daughter must be at least in 1st grade to play
 10u, 12u and 15u
PLEASE NOTE:  any child wanting to play 'up' a level will be decided by the Board on a case-by-case basis.  For example, if your daughter played 2 years at the formerly Petite level and would like to play up to the 10u, it will be the decision of the Board.

~ Registration will be opened up much sooner than in the past, so we can better plan for the upcoming season.  This was done last year at the older levels, and it proved successful.  Early registration also gives the players the ability to work at our indoor facility before the season starts, on their batting and pitching skills.  This indoor access will be over a month before games even begin.

~ We intend to have some professional training for each level throughout the winter months for registered players only.  This training will be provided through clinics run by Steven Ball.  Steven has been a professional instructor, coach and umpire for faspitch softball for over 30 years.  He has been a travel ball coach for teams such as the Beverly Bandits and Tinley Park Rockers for over 20 years.  Many students of his have gone on to play collegiate softball, and 4 of them have earned Gatorade Player of the Year awards.  We feel he will be a tremendous asset to our organization, and will provide some consistency to the level of training our coaches and girls will receive throughout the season.

~ Our coaches will also be receiving personal training so they will have the necessary skills to better work with their teams, and the ability to build those skills in each individual player.
Please know that the members of the OYA are working hard to bring your player the best experience possible, that will allow them to learn and grow in softball while still having fun.  You will be receiving an email in the next week or two about registration opening up.
Thank you,
OYA Board of Directors
